뉴질랜드 지진으로 사무실 건물이 붕괴된 뒤(after office block collapsed in New Zealand earthquake)

7시간 동안 갇혀 있었던(be trapped for seven hours) 여성이

자신을 구하기 위해 맨손으로 건물 잔해를 파낸(dig through the rubble with his bare hands to rescue her)

약혼자와 결혼식을 올렸다(go down the aisle with her fiance).

엠마 하워드(23)는 잔해 속에 태아처럼 웅크린 채 누워 갇혀 있던 기억을 밀쳐내고

(push aside memories of lying trapped in a fetal position)

25일 한 성당에서 크리스 그린슬레이드(25)와 결혼했다.

겁먹은 표정으로 잔해 속에서 이끌려 나온 지 3일

(three days after being dragged frightened from the rubble) 만이었다.

 

 

다행히 잔해에 깔리지 않았으나 꼼짝할 수 없게(be unable to budge) 된 그녀는

며칠 뒤로 예정돼 있던(be due in a few days) 결혼식도 못 올리고 죽을 것이라는 생각에

가슴이 터질 듯 울어댔다(cry fit to break her heart).

그러나 정신을 차린 그녀는 휴대폰을 사용해 주위에 불을 비춰봤다

(use her mobile phone to illuminate the surroundings).

그리고 약혼자에게 자신이 있는 위치를 알리는 문자메시지를 보냈다

(send her fiance a text message saying where she is).

그린슬레이드는 근처 자신의 사무실에서(from his nearby office)

붕괴된 건물로 쏜살같이 달려갔다(race to the crumbled building).

주저 없이 잔해를 파기 시작(begin digging into the rubble)했다.

맨손이었다.

부상당한 한 여성을 발견해 안전한 곳으로 옮겼다(carry an injured woman to safety).

하워드는 아니었다.

그녀는 다른 구조원들에 의해 발견돼 극적인 재회를 하게(have a dramatic reunion) 됐다.

결혼식 주례를 선(officiate their wedding) 신부는 말했다.

“한 남자분과 통화를 했습니다.

걸음마를 배우는 어린아이들을 데리고 엄마가 묻힌 곳을 보여주러

(show his little toddlers where their mom is buried) 간다고 했습니다.

우리는 지금 바로 그곳에서 살아난 아가씨를 결혼시키고(marry a girl who survived there) 있습니다.

너무나 슬프 고도 기쁜 날(a very bittersweet day)입니다.”
