법은 최소한의 도덕이다(represent an ethical minimum).

그러나 법의 맹점(a loophole in the law)도 적지 않다.

미국 50개주(州) 법령집에도 기이한 법률들이 남아있다(still have some weird laws on their statute books).

 

 

앨라배마=

교회에서 웃음을 유발하는(cause laughter in church)

가짜 수염을 다는(wear a fake mustache) 것은 불법이다(be illegal).

 

아칸소=

주 이름 Arkansas를 잘못 발음하면(mispronounce the name of the state) 법에 걸린다.

 

콜로라도=

진공청소기를 이웃에게 빌려주는(lend your vacuum cleaner to your next-door neighbor) 것은

불법이다(be unlawful).

 

플로리다=

주차료징수기에 코끼리를 매어두면(tie an elephant to a parking meter)

자동차와 똑같은 주차요금을 지불해야(pay the same parking fee) 한다.

 

조지아=

블라인드를 내리지(draw the shades) 않은 채

상점 정면 마네킹의 옷을 갈아입히면(change the clothes on a storefront mannequin) 안된다.

 

아이다호=

무게가 50파운드에 못 미치는 사탕 상자를 애인에게 줘서는 안된다

(must not give his sweetheart a box of candy weighing fewer than fifty pounds).

 

아이오와=

팔이 하나뿐인 피아노 연주자(one-armed piano player)는

무료 연주만 해야(must perform for free) 한다.

 

켄터키=

일년에 한 번 샤워를 해야(take a shower once a year) 한다.

 

루이지애나=

자연치(自然齒)로 사람을 물면 단순 폭행이 되고(constitute a simple assault),

의치(義齒)로 물면(bite someone with false teeth)

가중폭행으로 분류된다(classify as aggravated assault).

 

메인=

크리스마스 장식을 1월 14일 이후에도 계속 전시하면

(keep Christmas decorations on display after Jan.14) 벌금형에 처한다

 

메릴랜드=

싱크대가 아무리 더러워도(no matter how dirty a sink is)

그것을 씻거나 문질러 닦으면 안 된다.

 

미시간=

남편 허락 없이 머리를 깎을(cut her own hair without her husband's permission) 수 없다.

 

미시시피=

기저귀를 채우지 않고 개를 산보시키는(walk a dog without dressing it in diapers) 것은 금지한다.

 

네바다=

콧수염을 기른 남성들(men with mustaches)은 여성에게 키스할 수 없다.

 

뉴욕=

엘리베이터를 타고 있을 때는(while riding in an elevator) 누구에게도 말을 하지 말고(must talk to no one)

양손을 모은(fold your hands) 채 문 쪽을 바라보고(look toward the door) 있어야 한다.

 

노스캐롤라이나=

음정이 안 맞게 노래하면(sing off-key) 처벌받는다.

 

노스다코타=

신발을 신은 채 누워 잠들면(lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on) 불법이다.

 

오클라호마=

남의 햄버거를 한입 베어먹는(take a bite out of another person's hamburger) 것을 금한다.

 

버몬트=

부인이 의치를 하려면(wear false teeth)

남편의 서면 허락을 얻어야(obtain written permission from her husband) 한다.

 

워싱턴=

자기 부모가 부자인 척 하는(pretend that your parents are wealthy) 것은 불법이다.
