중국이 미국 버금가는(be second to the US) 세계 초강대국으로 자리 잡았다(set itself up as a global superpower).

이에 그치지 않고 세계 최고 자리를 넘보고(covet the world supremacy) 있다.

중국 BGI(Beijing Genomics Institute·베이징유전체학연구소)에선

국가 지원 유전공학 프로젝트를 진행하고(develop a state-endorsed genetic-engineering project) 있다.

인간 지능을 결정하는 대립유전자를 찾아내기 위해(in an attempt to identify the alleles)

세계에서 가장 머리 좋은 사람 2000명의 DNA 샘플을 수집해

(collect DNA samples from 2000 of the world's smartest people)

유전정보 게놈 배열순서 밝히는(sequence the genomes) 연구를 하고 있다.

 

 

덩샤오핑(鄧小平)은 1970년대 말 집권한(take power in the late 70s) 이후

정부의 모든 초점을 경제 관리에서 국민의 질(質) 관리로 옮겼다.

90년대 들어 중국은 선천성 장애를 가려내는 광범위한 출산 전 검사를 시행했고

(do widespread prenatal testing for birth defects),

최근엔 인간 유전학 연구에(in the research of human genetics) 엄청난 투자를 해왔다.

BGI의 연구 목적은 모든 부부의 인간 배아를 사전 검사해(screen their human embryo in advance)

가장 똑똑한 접합체를 골라(pick their brightest zygote) 아기를 낳게(give birth to a baby) 하려는 것이다.

정자와 난자로 실험실에서 여러 수정란을 만들고(have several eggs fertilized in the lab with their sperm and ovum),

그중 제일 뛰어난 것을 자궁에 착상시키려는(implant the best one in the mom's womb) 계획이다.

그렇게 해서 한 가구당 국민 IQ를 5~15씩 높여나가겠다는(bump up every generation's IQ by five to 15) 것이다.

몇 세대에 걸쳐 국민 지능을 기하급수적으로 늘려(exponentially multiply the population's intelligence) 세계 최고로 만들겠다는 복안이다.

과학적 발견을 정부 정책으로 변형하는(transform the scientific findings into government policy) 것은

인륜에 어긋나는 행위(an outrage against humanity)가 아닐까.

그들의 중화(中華)사상은 중국이 세계의 중심이라는 역사적 자리를 되찾아야

(restore China to its historical place as the center of the world) 한다고 여긴다.

수단·방법 안 가릴(swear black is white) 것이다.
