SK그룹과 한화그룹에 이어 CJ그룹 회장도 곧 구속될(be placed under arrest) 처지에 놓였다.

재벌총수(head of conglomerate), 권력재벌(power plutocrat)들이

 탈세, 비자금 조성, 횡령, 배임 등의 혐의로(on charges of tax evasion, raising a slush fund, embezzlement, dereliction of duty and so on)

잇달아 법의 심판을 받고 있다(be judged by the law one after another).

"있는 사람들이 더한다"고는 하지만, 도대체 왜 이러는 걸까.

'권력은 부패하기 쉽고, 절대 권력은 절대적으로 부패한다(Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely)'고 했다.

그런데 여기에는 과학적 이유가 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.

출세와 높은 지위의 과시적 요소(trappings of success and elevated position)들이

사람들을 부정직해지기 쉽게 만든다는(make people more likely to be dishonest) 것이다.

이번 연구를 이끈(spearhead the research) 앤디 얩 MIT 교수에 따르면,

 운동장 같은 사무실, 비싼 승용차의 널찍한 좌석 등은

사람으로 하여금 더 많은 힘을 가진 것처럼 느끼게 한다(cause people to feel more powerful).

그것이 결국엔(in turn) 생각, 느낌, 행동에 크나큰 영향을 줘서(have tremendous impact on their thoughts, feelings and behavior)

더 많은 부정직한 행동을 불러온다(elicit more dishonest behavior).

빼앗고, 속이고, 심지어 교통법규 위반도 더 한다(steal, cheat and even commit more traffic violations).

불법 주차된(be illegally parked) 차 중에도 좌석이 큰 고급 승용차들이 훨씬 많다.

 

 

몸의 자세는 일상적인 근로·생활 주변 속에서(in everyday working and living environments)

환경에 따라 무심코 팽창하거나 수축된다(be inadvertently expanded or contracted by the surroundings).

승용차 좌석, 작업공간 주변 가구, 사무실 복도도 부정직한 결정과 행동 성향에 영향을 미친다

(influence the propensity of dishonest decisions and behaviors).

돈도 없고 권력도 없는 사람은 일상생활의 모든 공간이 좁다.

그렇다 보니 축 처진 웅크린 자세를 갖게(have a slumped and constricted posture) 되고,

이는 학습된 무력감과 스트레스를 가져온다(induce a state of learned helplessness and feelings of stress).

반면 널따란 사무실 거대한 책상에 앉아 있는(sit behind an enormous desk in a cavernous office) 기업인은 탐욕적이 되기 쉽다.

권력을 갖고 있다고 느끼면 더욱 자신의 사리사욕과 목적에 따라 행동하고

(act on their own self-interests and goals) 자기에게 돌아오는 것에 집착하게(focus on rewards) 된다.

'권력은 거대한 최음제(Power is the great aphrodisiac)'(헨리 키신저·전 미국 국무장관)이기 때문이다.
