세계 최고 실력을 자랑하는(boast of the best competency in the world)

한국 양궁 대표팀(national archery team)에게 위협적인 적수(threatening rival)가 나타났다.

중국도 아니고, 일본도 아니다. 브라질이다.

그것도 국가대표 선수촌이 아니라 아마존 정글 출신들이다.

브라질이 2016년 리우데자네이루 올림픽을 앞두고

양궁선수 발굴을 위해 정글 부족들을 찾아다니고(search jungle tribes for the archers) 있다.

깊은 정글 속에서 태어난(be born in the heart of jungle) 원주민들은

타고난 소질의 전통적인 활과 화살 기술을 지니고 있기(possess traditional bow and arrow skills in the blood) 때문이다.

 

 

어린 시절 첫 장난감이 활과 화살인 원주민들은 천부적 능력을 타고나(be endowed with their inherent abilities)

100m 상공을 날아가는 새를 맞혀(hit birds flying 100 meters high in the air) 떨어트리고

강물 속 고기를 한 방에 꿰뚫는(spear fish in the river with just one hit) 솜씨를 갖고 있다.

세계 최대 열대우림(the world's largest rainforest)인 아마존은

각기 다른 인종 집단인 약 400개 원주민 부족의 고향(the home to about 400 indigenous tribes with different ethnic groups)이다.

대대로 물려받은(be handed down from generation to generation),

부모가 자식에게 전수해준 선천적 능력을 가진 활잡이(archer with innate ability passed from parents to children)들이

쌔고 쌨다(be superabundant).

브라질은 이미 발군의 실력(outstanding skill)을 가진 80여명을 선별,

일련의 예선을 거쳐(go through a series of qualifying tournaments)

톱 10을 추려낸(whittle them down to the top 10) 상태다.

이들의 선천적 소질을 최첨단 기술과 결합시켜(combine their inborn predispositions with the cutting edge technology)

훈련시킨 후 3명의 최종 후보자 명단을 작성(draw up a shortlist of final top three), 올림픽에 출전시킬 예정이다.

이 아마존 전사(Amazonian warrior)들은 자세, 신체 동작 조정력, 화살 놓는 기법, 마무리 동작 등을 새로 익히며

(brush up their posture, coordination, release, follow-through and so on)

집중적인 기술 훈련을 받고 있다(undergo intensive technique training).

브라질은 양궁 외에 카누와 카약 선수들도 아마존에서 발굴할(discover canoeists and kayakers) 예정이다.

어려서부터 아마존강 굴곡진 물길을 자유자재 휘젓고 다닌

(go all over the winding waterways of Amazon river at their command) '선수'들이

아마존강 주변 곳곳에 숨어있을 것이기 때문이다.

올림픽이 열릴 리우데자네이루의 '리우(rio)'도 '강(江)'이라는 뜻이다
