다른 사람의 어깨너머로 엿보는(peep over other people's shoulders) 행위를

컴퓨터 보안 분야에선 'shoulder surfing(어깨 서핑)'이라고 한다.

말 그대로(as the word itself means) 어깨 위로 훔쳐보면서(sneak a peek)

개인 식별 번호, 비밀번호, 기타 기밀 자료 정보를 입수하는

(obtain information such as personal identification numbers, passwords and other confidential data) 수법을 말한다.

현금인출기에서 돈을 찾는(withdraw money from automated teller machine) 사람 뒤에서

몰래 훔쳐보는(steal a look) 것도 이에 해당한다.

 

 

사람들이 붐비는 곳에서 일어나기 쉽다(be likely to occur in crowded places).

피해자 관심을 끌지 않으면서(without getting the victim's attention) 개인 정보를 빼내기 용이하기 때문이다.

최근엔 몰래카메라와 같은 현대 기술의 등장으로(with the advent of modern-day technologies like hidden cameras)

먼 거리에서 훔쳐보기 하는(perform long range surreptitious glance) 것도 가능해졌다.

접속 과정 전체를 포착할(capture whole login process) 수 있어

재정적 손실이나 신원 도용으로 이어지고(lead to financial loss or identity theft) 있다.

그런데 스마트폰처럼 손에 들고 쓰는 모바일 장치(handheld mobile devices)가

널리 보급되면서(come into wide use) 어깨너머 엿보기가 흔한 일이 됐다(become commonplace).

휴대형 개인 정보 단말기의 사적인 내용이나 민감한 정보

(private content and sensitive information on handheld personal digital assistants)가

버스 안에서든 지하철에서든 엿보기에 쉽게 노출되고 있다.

누구나 다른 사람이 들고 있는 화면을 엿보고 싶은 마음에 끌리게 된다(be drawn to taking a peep at other people's screens).

남의 방에 들어갔을 때 책상 서랍을 열어 보고(pull out their desk drawers) 싶은 심리와 비슷하다.

물론, 버스나 지하철 안에서 악의를 갖고(bear malicious intent) 엿보기 하는 사람은 많지 않을 것이다.

옆자리 신문 힐끔거리는(catch a furtive glimpse of a newspaper) 것이나 크게 다를 바 없다.

독일 뮌헨대학교 연구팀의 조사 결과, 응답자 대부분은 주위 다른 사람의 휴대폰을 보게 되는 것은

우연하고 우발적이라고(be casual and opportunistic) 답했다.

호기심(curiosity)과 지루함(boredom)이 엿보기 이유의 공동 1위였다(be tied for first).

그러나 엿볼 때는 죄책감(guilt)과 불안감(unease), 당할 때는 당혹감(embarrassment)과 분노(anger)를 느낀다고 했다.

훔쳐보기는 단순한 사생활 침해(invasion of privacy)가 아니라

또 다른 형태의 절도 행위(another form of theft)라는 대답도 있었다.
