미국도 수십 년 만에 가장 어려운 취직 시장에 직면해 있는 가운데

(facing the most difficult job market in decades),

일부 구직자들은 다른 다수의 구직자들로부터 돋보이기 위해 비관행적인 방법들에 매달리고

(resort to using unconventional methods to stand out from the crowd) 있다.

고용주들의 관심을 끌려고 진귀한 수법들을 사용

(turn to unusual gimmicks to grab the attention of potential employers)하는 구직자 중엔

이력서와 함께 신발 한 짝을 보낸(send a shoe along with a resume) 경우도 있다.

“귀사의 문에 내 발을 들일 수(get my foot in the door of your company) 있게 해달라”는 간곡한 표현이었다.

미국의 온라인 구직·구인 사이트인 커리어빌더의 새 조사에 따르면

(according to a new survey from CareerBuilder),

채용 담당자들 5명 중 거의 1명(nearly one-in-five hiring managers)은

올 들어 채용자의 관심을 끌기 위해 독특한 전술을 시도하는 구직자들을 더 많이 보게

(see more job seekers try unusual tactics to capture hirers’ attention) 됐다고 말한다.

지난해엔 조사대상의 12% 채용 담당자들이 그런 구직자들을 경험했다고 했으니, 8%가 늘어난 셈이다.

일자리 찾기(the search for employment)는

과거 수년보다 경쟁이 더 심해졌고(be much more competitive than it has been in past years),

걸리는 기간도 훨씬 더 길어지고(be taking much longer) 있다.

25년래 가장 높은 실업에 직면해(faced with the highest unemployment in 25 years) 구직자들은

다음과 같은 다양한 수법들을 시도(try a variety of tricks as follow)하고 있다.

구직자 사진이 들어간 명함 모양의 케이크를 보낸다

(send a cake designed as a business card with the candidate’s picture)

회사 앞 신호등에서 이력서를 배포한다

(hand out resumes at stoplights in front of the company)

이력서를 선물처럼 포장해서 보내며(send a resume wrapped as a present)

자신의 능력과 경험이 회사에 선물(a gift to the company)이 될 것이라고 강조한다

회사 주차장에서 차들을 세차해준다(wash cars in a company parking lot)

회사 로비에서 간부와의 만남을 요청하며 앉아 있는다

(stage a sit-in in a company lobby to demand a meeting with director)

자신의 이름 머리글자 등을 붙인 커피잔을 나눠준다(hand out personalized coffee cups)

회사 사장 머리를 깎는 이발사에게 가서 자신을 대신해 말을 해줄 것을 부탁한다

(go to the same barber as the company chairman to have the barber speak on his behalf)

이 밖에도 기발한 아이디어들은 많다.

하지만 채용 매니저들은 “독특한 구직 익살 행동들(unusual job search antics)이

채용 담당자들의 관심을 끌 수는(may attract the attention of hiring managers) 있지만,

올바른 동기로 기억되기 위해서는(to be remembered for the right reasons)

신중하고 전문성 있게 해야(need to be done with care and professionalism) 한다고 조언한다 .

이번 조사는 지난 2월 20일부터 3월 11일 사이에

미국내 2543명의 풀타임 채용 담당자들과 인력관리 전문가들을 상대로 실시됐다.

전체 조사결과(the overall results)의 오차 범위는 1.94 퍼센트 포인트

(have a margin of error of plus or minus 1.94 percentage points)다.
