블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 총리 집무실 근처에서 총격을 받고 살해된

(be shot dead near Putin‘ s office) 옛 소련 국가보안위원회(KGB) 출신

백만장자 샤브타이 칼마노비치는 과거 유대인 이중 스파이(a former Jewish double agent)였으며,

이번 암살 사건은 그의 여자농구팀 소유권과 관련해(be linked to the ownership of a women’ s basketball team)

마피아에 의해 자행된 것으로 보인다고 외신들이 4일 전했다.

칼마노비치는 지난 2일 벤츠 S600을 타고 모스크바 강변도로를 지나던 중

옆 차량의 정체불명 총잡이(an unidentified gunman)가 퍼부은 20여발의 총격을 받고 현장에서 즉사(die on the spot)했다.

칼마노비치는 KGB 스파이였다가 유명한 사업가로 변신한(later reinvent himself as a prominent businessman) 뒤

러시아 마피아와 밀접한 관계를 가져(have close links with the Russian mafia) 온 것으로 알려졌다.

 

칼마노비치와 여자농구 선수

변화가 많았던 과거를 가진 인물(a figure with a checkered past)인 칼마노비치는

지난 1971년 자신의 유대인 가족(his Jewish family)과 함께

 리투아니아에서 이스라엘로 이주(immigrate to Israel from Lithuania)했다.

이스라엘 시민이 된 뒤에는(after becoming an Israel citizen)

이스라엘 노동당에 가입(join the Israel Labor Party)했으며,

정부 홍보부처 자리에 임명된(be appointed to a position in the government press office) 이후

KGB의 비밀 첩자가 됐다(become a mole for the KGB).

그는 이어 이스라엘 의회인 크네셋의 보좌관으로 자리를 옮겨

(move to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, as an aide)

골다 메이어 전 총리를 비롯한(including the former prime minister Golda Meir)

여러 주요 정부인사들과 가까운 관계를 성공적으로 형성

(forge close relations with several leading government figures)해 갔다.

미국 중앙정보국에 따르면(according to the CIA),

칼마노비치는 이스라엘 첩자 혐의로 종신형을 받고 복역 중인 미국 국적자 조너선 폴라드로부터 이스라엘이 입수한

(acquire from Jonathan Plllard, an American national now serving life in prison for spying for Israel)

민감한 미국 정보들(sensitive American intelligence)을

러시아에 넘긴(be responsible for passing on them to Moscow) 것으로 알려져 있다.

칼마노비치는 1980년대 아프리카로 도주해(flee to Africa in the 1980s)

KGB를 위한 스파이 활동을 계속하는 한편으로(while continuing to spy for the KGB)

시에라레온 수도 프리타운의 유일한 버스를 운영

(become the proprietor of the only bus operating in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone)하기도 했다.

그러나 얼마 후 이스라엘로 송환돼(be later extradited to Israel)

5년간 감옥생활을 하다가 1993년 정보기관 거래의 일환으로

(as part of an intelligence deal) 러시아에 다시 인계됐다(be handed back to Russia).

러시아로 돌아온 칼마노비치는 기업가와 사교가로 변신

(reinvent himself as an entrepreneur and man-about-town)했다.

그는 잽싸게 수 백만 달러의 재산을 모으면서(quickly making a multi-million dollar fortune)

마이클 잭슨과 라이자 미넬리를 모스크바에 데려가

대규모 대중컨서트를 열기도(stage massively popular concerts) 했다.

그는 또 여자농구의 후원자가 돼(become a patron of women‘ s basketball)

가장 잘 나가는 팀들 중 하나였던 ‘스파르타크 모스크바’를 인수

(take over Spartak Moscow, one of the game‘ s most successful teams)했다.

선수들은 모스크바 외곽 호반의 한 화려한 빌라에 입주하게 했는데

(be housed in a lavish lakeside villa outide Moscow),

이 빌라는 훈련캠프라기 보다는 ’플레이보이 맨션‘ 같아 보였다

(seem more ’ Playboy Mansion‘ than training camp)고 한다.

또 다른 논란거리들(other controversies)도 있었다.

그의 부인은 러시아에서 가장 유명한 여자 팝스타들 중 한 명과 ’관계‘를 갖고 있는 것으로 알려졌었다

(be allegedly involved in a relationship with one of Russia’ s most famous female pop stars).

이와 관련, 칼마노비치는 “그들이 함께 산다고 해도(even if they live together)

끔직할 것은 없다(there is nothing terrible about it)”면서

“두 명의 아름다운 여자들을 함께 보는(look at two beautiful women at the same time) 것도

나쁘지 않다”고 말한 것으로 전해진다.

러시아 경찰은 이번 암살과 칼마노비치의 스파르타크 농구클럽 소유권 사이에 관련이 있을

(there could be a link between the assassination and Kalmanovich‘ s owership of the Spartak basketball club) 것으로 보고 있다.

이는 이번 사건이 마피아와 관계돼(be mafia related) 있음을 뜻한다.

러시아는 1990년대에 마피아 연계 폭력의 동의어처럼 됐으나

(become synonymous with mafia-linked violence in the 1990s)

90년대 말에는 유혈행위(the bloodshed)가 현저히 줄어들었었다

(drop off significantly by the end of the decade).

그렇기는 하지만(even so) 청부살인(contract killing)은

최근 수년 간 더욱 빈번하게 벌어지고 있는 것으로 보고 되고

(be reported on an increasingly frequent basis in recent years) 있다.

야폰치크로 더욱 잘 알려져 있는 러시아 범죄조직 두목 비야체스라프 이반코프

(Vyancheslav Ivankov, a Russian crime boss better known as Yaponchik)가

지난 7월 총격을 받아 치명상을 입은(be shot and fatally wounded in July) 뒤에는

마피아 전쟁이 새롭게 벌어질 것이라는 경고들(warnings of a fresh bout of mob warfare)이 잇달아 나오고 있다.

러시아 언론 매체들에 따르면(according to Russian media outlets)

칼마노비치는 야폰치크와 매우 친밀하게 지내왔던(have been very friendly with Yaponchik) 것으로 알려졌다.
