버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 (동영상 사이트) 유튜브와 인터뷰를 갖는 첫 미국 대통령이 됐다

(become the first US president to conduct an interview on YouTube).

오바마 대통령은 지난주 국정연설을 한 뒤 열린

(be held in the wake of his state of the union speech last week) 유튜브 인터뷰에서

이 대중사이트에 접수된 일반인들의 비디오 질문을 받고 답하는

(take video questions submitted by the general public to the popular website) 형식으로

자신의 국정 철학을 밝혔다.

앞서 유튜브 편집자들은 오바마 대통령이 강경한 질문들에 직면하게 될(will face tough questions) 것이라고 예고했으며,

실제로 유튜브와의 인터뷰에서 오바마 대통령은

국내 경제와 고용 문제에 치우쳐 폄하해왔던(have played down in favor of the domestic economy and jobs) 수단과

관타나모수용소와 같은 이슈들에 대해 많은 추궁을 당했다(be much pressed on issues such as Sudan and Guantanamo).

이날 인터뷰 질문들은 주어진 일정 주제에 대해 제기된 질의의 건수에 따라 선별됐다

(be picked according to the volume of enquiries submitted on any given topic).

오바마는 이 유튜브 인터뷰에서 수단에 대해 안정화 노력에 협조할 것을 다시 한 번 촉구하는

(urge Sudan once again to co-operate in efforts to stabilize the country) 한편,

그러지 않을 경우 약속이 제대로 이행되지 않고 있다는(be not properly working) 결론을 내리고

수단에 추가적인 압박을 가할(would seek additional pressure on Sudan) 것이라고 경고했다.

오바마는 이어 “우리는 이미 수단 정부에 압박을 계속해(continue to put pressure on the Sudanese government) 왔다”고 전제,

“이러한 노력들에 비협조적일(be not co-operative in these efforts) 경우

우리의 목적 달성을 위해(in order to achieve our objectives)

수단에 추가적인 압박을 가할 수 밖에 없게 될(will be going to have to apply additional pressure on Sudan) 것”이라고 못박았다.

오바마는 그러나 “해당 지역에서의 엄청난 인륜적 비극에 간여하고 있는 모든 당사자들과의 합의를 중재할

(broker agreements with all the parties involved to deal with the enormous human tragedy in that region) 수 있기를 희망한다”고 말해

일말의 타협 가능성을 시사했다.

오바마 행정부는 지금까지 20만명을 죽음에 이르게 하고(leave 200,000 people dead)

수단 친정부군에 의해 300여만명이 주거지에서 강제로 쫓겨난

(leave three million forced out of their homes by forces loyal to the Sudanese government)

다르푸르 종족 분쟁에 거의 신경을 쓰지 않고 있다는(pay scant attention to the Darfur tribal conflict) 일부의 비난을 받아왔다.

오바마 대통령의 이번 유튜브 인터뷰는

비디오와 개인 정보를 공유하는 사이트들에 늘어나고 있는 온라인 오디언스들에 접근하기 위한 대체 미디어매체 실험

(an experiment with alternative media forms to reach a growing online audience on setes sharing videos and personal information)과

관련해 백악관의 지속적 노력의 일환으로(a sort of continuing efforts by the White House) 받아들여지고 있다.

오바마는 대통령 후보 시절 유튜브, 페이스북, 기타 다른 서비스들을 상당히 잘 이용

(make prominent use of YouTube, Facebook and other services)했으며,

이번 유튜브 인터뷰도 자신에 대한 온라인상의 지지 에너지를 대통령직 수행에 유용한 힘으로 활용하려는

(translate the energy of his online support into any beneficial force for his presidency) 의지를 보인 것으로 풀이되고 있다.
