1977년에 결혼, 32년간 부부로 살아왔다(have been married for 32 years).

4명의 아이를 낳아 기르며(bear and rear four children)

남편이 상원의원과 대통령 후보(a presidential candidate)에 이르도록 온갖 내조를 다했다.

1996년 16세이던 장남이 교통사고로 죽고(be killed in a car crash),

본인은 암에 걸리는(contract cancer) 등 시련을 겪었지만(undergo ordeals)

남편에게 정성을 다했다(take care of him with all her heart).

그녀가 지난달 7일 세상을 떠났다(pass away).

그런데 유방암으로 사망하기(lose her battle to breast cancer) 엿새 전

서명한 그녀의 유언장에 남편은 단 한 차례도 언급되지 않았다(be not mentioned even once in the will).

존 에드워즈 전 미국 상원의원의 부인 엘리자베스(61)는 배신감과 분함에 치를 떨며

(quiver with a sense of betrayal and indignation) 죽어갔다.

남편이 2008년 대통령 후보 지명전에 나섰을 당시(during his bid for the 2008 presidential nomination)

선거참모인 한 여성과 바람을 피워 딸까지 낳은(have an affair and father a daughter) 사실을 알게 된 것이다.

 

 

남편은 하룻밤 관계였을 뿐(be just a one-night stand)이라고 둘러댔다(make up a lie).

한 충성스러운 보좌관을 꼬드겨 그 사생아의 아버지라고 말하게 해놓고

(coax a loyal aide into admitting paternity of the lovechild)

자신은 혼외정사를 이어갔다(continue the extramarital intercourse).

그녀는 부정한 남편에게 아무것도 남기지 않고(leave nothing to her cheating husband) 떠났다.

"나의 모든 것을 아이들에게 물려준다(bequeath all that belong to me to my children)"는 유언을 남겼다.

지난해 1월 남편과 별거에 들어간 지(split the blanket) 11개월, 암 투병 6년 만이었다.

별거 중인 남편에게 에둘러 말한 유일한 욕(the only backhanded insult to her estranged husband)은

"내가 '대단한 남자'와 결혼했었나 보다(marry a 'marvelous man')"라는 것이었다.

결혼 이후 32년 동안 11달러짜리 결혼반지를 항상 끼고 다녔다고 한다.
