갑자기 억수 같은 비가 쏟아졌다(pour in torrents).

길거리 한복판에 있던(be in the middle of a street) 연로한 지체장애 거지(a disabled elderly beggar)가

그 비를 쫄딱 맞고(thoroughly get soaked) 있다.

바퀴가 달린 조그마한 나무판 위에 앉아 어떻게든 움직여보려

(move himself on a small wheeled wooden board) 안간힘을 다하지만

(fall over himself) 속수무책이다(be at a loss what to do).

갑작스러운 폭풍우 때문에(as a result of a sudden rainstorm)

의지할 데 없이 빗속에서 허우적거리고(struggle helplessly in the rain) 있다.

그때 연보랏빛 우산을 든 가녀린 한 소녀(a thin frail girl holding a light purple umbrella)가

거센 빗줄기 속으로 뛰어들었다(rush into the rain streaks pouring down).

소녀는 나무판에 쪼그리고 앉아 느릿느릿 움직이는(sluggishly move on his hunkers) 거지 할아버지에게

우산을 씌워준 채 마냥 따라간다(follow him up endlessly).

소녀의 우산은 거지 할아버지에게 완전히 기울어져 있다(be completely slanted towards the old beggar).

계속 따라가면서 빗물을 막아주려 갖은 애를 쓰는(make every effort to shield him from the rain) 사이,

소녀의 옷은 흠뻑 젖어버린다(get drenched to the skin).

 

 

빗물에 완전히 젖어(be dripping wet) 속옷까지 비칠 정도였지만,

자신에겐 아랑곳하지 않는다(give no attention to herself).

주위에서 여러 사람이 지켜보고 있지만, 거지 할아버지가 비를 피하는 곳까지

묵묵히 우산을 받쳐든 채(silently hold an umbrella over him) 따라간다.

이 귀한 순간들은 중국 장쑤(江蘇)성 쑤저우(蘇州)의 한 네티즌이 카메라로 우연히 포착하게

(happen to capture the precious moments with his camera) 됐다.

인터넷에 사진들을 올린(post the photos on the internet) 맨 첫 사람(the very first person)인 이 네티즌은

당시 상황을 회고하며(recall the circumstances of the moment) "

소녀가 거지 할아버지를 바래다주고 오면서 눈물을 흘리는(shed tears) 것 같았다"고 전했다.

 

 

사진들은 이내 포털사이트들로 퍼져나갔고,

이를 본 네티즌들은 폭우 속의 가장 아름다운 장면

(the most beautiful scene in the middle of the heavy downpour)이라며

잇달아 소녀를 칭송하는(praise the girl one after another) 글을 올리고 있다.

언론 매체들은 소녀 신원에 대해 제보해달라고(come forward with information about her identity) 광고까지 내고 있다.

연민(憐憫)은 영혼의 항독소(抗毒素)이며(the antitoxin of the soul),

귀먹은 사람도 들을 수 있고, 눈먼 사람도 볼 수 있는 언어라고 했다.

남에게 베풀었다고 해서 가난해진 사람은 없다(No one has ever become poor by giving).
