"약한 자여, 그대 이름은 여자"(Frailty, thy name is woman).

셰익스피어가 '햄릿'에 이렇게 썼을 때만 해도 옛날이다.

 

"여자는 남자의 갈비뼈로 만들어졌다(be made from man's rib)"느니

"여성 정치인이 적은 것은 두 얼굴에 화장하기(put makeup on two faces) 힘들어서"라는 등

여성을 경시하고 폄하하는(belittle and disparage women) 표현은

이제 가당찮다는(be preposterous) 소리를 듣는다.

알파 걸들을 필두로(with alpha girls in the lead)

여성들의 사회진출(the entry of women in public affairs)이 두드러지면서

남녀 형세를 역전시키는(turn the tables) 상황이 벌어지고 있다.

젊은 독신여성들은 남성들보다 더 많은 돈을 벌고(outearn men) 있고,

생계비를 버는 여성 가장(家長·female breadwinner)도 늘어나고 있다.

미국에선 자녀가 없는 30세 이하 독신여성들이 남성 상대보다 평균 8% 더 많은 돈을 버는

(make an average of 8 percent more money than their male counterparts) 것으로 조사됐다.

 

 

고소득 젊은 여성 집단의 등장(the emergence of the cohort of high-earning young women)과

여성가장 숫자의 증가(the increasing number of female breadwinners)는

남녀 관계를 탈바꿈시키고(transform gender relationship) 있다.

중매와 결혼 패턴을 거꾸로 만들고(upend patterns of matchmaking and marriage),

새로운 남녀 갈등을 빚으며, '가장'이라는 단어 의미를 재정립해가고(redefine the word 'breadwinner') 있다.

남편이 더 많은 집안일을 하는(take care of a greater share of the household affairs) 동안

아내가 밥벌이를 해오는(bring home the bacon) 경우도 늘어나고 있다.

그로 인해 가계의 부수입원인 남편 또는 전업남편과의 관계를 해치면서

(undermine their relationships with secondary earners or househusbands)

사랑 게임에 혼란을 빚기도(play havoc with the dating game) 한다.

일부 잘나가는 여성들은 남성이 싫어할까 봐(be afraid to put men off)

일부러 자신의 직업에 대해 거짓말을 한다(lie about what she does for a living).

또 높은 한도액의 신용카드를 꺼내들기보다는(rather than whipping out her high-limit credit card)

소액권 지폐를 갖고 다니며(carry small bills) 팁, 음료수값, 주차료만 내는 현명함을 보이기도 한다.

일부 여성들은 자신들 수준에 맞는 남성 범위가 줄어들자(be faced with a shrinking pool of men on their level)

다른 곳으로 '데이트 여행'을 하러 비행기에 올라탄다(jump on planes for 'dating excursions').

스페인에선 여성들은 스웨덴 같은 선진 북유럽 남성들과 결혼하고

(marry men from advanced Northern European countries like Sweden),

남성들은 가난한 스페인어권 국가들에서 이민 온 신붓감을 찾는(seek out immigrant wives) 현상이 벌어지고 있다.

이런 현상은 세계적 추세를 시사하는(point to a global trend) 것이다.

여성은 차(茶)봉지 같다(be like a tea bag).

뜨거운 물(곤경)에 빠질수록(be in hot water) 더 강해진다.

history(역사)를 herstory로 바꾸자고 하는 날이 올지도 모른다.
