45세인 부장판사가 법정에 증인으로 출석한(appear in court as a witness)

66세 할머니에게 "늙으면 죽어야 한다"는 막말을 해(bombard rough words) 물의를 빚었다(arouse criticism).

사기 및 사문서 위조(a fraud and forgery of private documents) 사건 피해자인 할머니가

진술을 명확히 하지(make a clear statement) 못하고 오락가락하자 불쑥 내뱉은(blurt out) 말이다.

사기 피해를 입은 것만 해도 억울한데(it's bad enough being wronged)

판사에게 모욕까지 당한(be even slighted by a judge) 것이다.

나이 든 노인들은 왜 그렇게 사기꾼들에게 쉽게 속는 걸까(be easily duped by the con artists).

속이 빤히 보이는 사기에도 속아 넘어간다(fall for the thinly disguised scams).

대부분 사람에게 그렇게 명백한 야바위로 보이는

(seem such an obvious swindle to the majority) 것도 제대로 판단하지 못한다.

시골 할머니들은 공짜 상품을 준다는 얄팍한 사기 상술에 속아

(be deceived by the misleading sales gimmicks) 엉터리 물건들을 사들이기 일쑤다.

 

 

어리석어서가 아니다.

60세 이후엔 의심 기능을 관장하는 뇌의 특정 부위가 쇠퇴하기 시작하기(begin to deteriorate) 때문이다.

복내측 전전두엽(vmPFC·ventromedial prefrontal cortex)이 조절하는

'의심 과정'에 결손이 생김에 따라(as a result of a deficit in the 'doubt process') 판단력이 흐려지게 된다.

그러면 허위 정보, 노골적인 속임수와 사기에도 취약해진다

(become vulnerable to misleading information, outright deception and fraud).

젊은 사람들에 비해 더 쉽게 속아 넘어 간다(be more gullible than young people).

인터넷 팝업 광고(internet pop-up advertisement),

은행 계좌 상세 정보를 알려주면 복권 당첨을 시켜준다는 꾐(a temptation offering a lottery win in exchange for bank details),

믿기지 않을 정도로 좋은 조건을 제시하는 전화 이용 구입 권유자들(cold callers ringing with a too-good-to-be-true deal)이

노인들에겐 그럴싸하게 보이는(seem plausible) 것이다.

너무나 명백한 사기 책략인데도 속절없이 넘어간다(be taken in by apparently obvious fraud schemes).

문제의 뇌 부위 vmPFC는 소프트볼 공 크기 정도로(be nearly the size of a softball),

사람의 머리 앞쪽 눈 바로 위에 있다(sit at the front of the human head, directly above the eyes).

60세 이후에 퇴화가 진행되는데,

퇴화의 시작과 진행 속도(the onset and the pace of deterioration)는 사람마다 다르다.

문제의 부장판사는 무심코 실언을 했을(inadvertently put his foot in his mouth) 것이지만,

어쩌면 vmPFC 퇴화가 그에게 조금 일찍 찾아왔을 수도 있다.
