경기침체로 전 세계에 구조조정 바람이 불고 있는 가운데,

급기야 실직자들을 위한 기도문(prayer for those made redundant)이 나왔다.

또 직장에 남아 그들을 떠나 보내야 하는 동료 직원들을 위한 기도문

(prayer for colleagues who remain behind in the workplace)도 만들어졌다.

영국 성공회(聖公會·Church of England)는

실업 사태로 야기되고 있는 고뇌(the anguish prompted by a wave of job losses)에

위안을 주기(provide comfort) 위해 두 가지 기도문을 만들었다.

하나는 ‘해고자를 위한 기도’(Prayer on Being Made Redundant),

다른 하나는 ‘남아있는 자들을 위한 기도’(Prayer For Those Remaining In The Workplace)다.

해고자를 위한 기도는 최근의 해고 격랑에 휩쓸려(in the wave of recent redundancies)

직장을 잃은 이들의 근심을 말로 표현(put into words the anxieties of those who lose their job)했다.

한 예로 기도문에는 “당혹감에 절규하는 제 말을 들어주시고(Hear me as I cry out in confusion),

또렷하게 생각하며 제 영혼을 진정시킬 수 있도록 도와주소서

(help me to think clearly and calm my soul”라는 표현이 들어있다.

남아있는 자들을 위한 기도는 죄책감 및 해고와 관련해 가중된 업무부담에 초점

(focus on the guilty conscience and increased workload associated with redundancy)을 맞추고 있다.

 “이 불확실성 속에서도(in the midst of this uncertainty) 계속 나아가고(keep going)

내 능력의 최선을 다해 일하며(work to the best of my ability)

하루 하루를 맞이하게 하소서”라고 기도한다.

두 기도문에 대해 성공회 측은 교회가 언제든지(at all times),

특히 위기에 처했을 때(especially in times of crisis)

사람들과 함께 한다는 것을 보여주고자 했다고 작성 취지를 설명한다.

갈수록 늘어나는 실직자들을 위한 새 기도문(a new prayer for the growing ranks of the unemployed)을 제시,

하느님이 늘 그들과 함께 한다는 믿음으로 슬픈 감정(the feeling of sadness)과

힘겨운 시간을 헤쳐나갈 수 있도록 도와주고자(help them through troubled times) 했다고 밝혔다.

성공회는 두 기도문을 홈페이지에 올리는 한편, 교회에서 나눠주는 전단에도 인쇄

(print the two prayers in a leaflet to be handed out in churches)해

신자들이 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 할 예정이다.

◇ Prayer on Being Made Redundant

‘Redundant’ the word says it all -

‘useless,

unnecessary,

without purpose,

surplus to requirements.’

Thank you, Heavenly Father, that in the middle of

the sadness,

the anger,

the uncertainty,

the pain,

I can talk to you.

Hear me as I cry out in confusion,

help me to think clearly,

and calm my soul.

As life carries on,

may I know your presence with me

each and every day.

And as I look to the future,

help me to look for fresh opportunities, for new directions.

Guide me by your Spirit,

and show me your path,

through Jesus, the way, the truth and the life. Amen.

◇ Prayer for those remaining in the workplace

Life has changed: colleagues have gone redundant, out of work.

Suddenly, what seemed so secure is now so very fragile.

It's hard to know what I feel:

sadness, certainly,

guilt, almost, at still having a job to go to,

and fear of the future:

Who will be next?

How will I cope with the increased pressure of work?

Lord Jesus, in the midst of this uncertainty, help me to keep going:

to wor k to the best of my ability,

taking each day at a time,

and taking time each day to walk with you

for you are the way, the truth and the life. Amen.
