오바마의 새 전용 리무진

 

버락 오바마 미국 대통령 당선자(President-elect)는

오는 20일 워싱턴D.C. 펜실베이니아 애비뉴 1600의 백악관에 입성한다.

이 때 오바마는 제너럴모터스(GM)가 비밀리에 제작한 특수 디자인의 중무장 리무진

(a highly armored and specially designed limousine manufactured in secrecy by General Motors)을 타게 된다.

최신형 첨단 리무진(a newest high-tech limo)이다.

새 전용차는 취임 선서를 한 오바마가 백악관으로 향하는(make his way to the White House)

취임 퍼레이드를 통해 처음 데뷔(make its debut during the inaugural parade)한다.

이 차의 탑승객(the car’s passenger)은

세계에서 가장 잘 알려진 사람(the most well-known man in the world)이지만,

차의 보닛 아래 기술적으로 어떤 것들이 들어있는지(what’s under the hood in terms of technology)는

국가 기밀사항(remain a national secret)이어서 알려진 것이 거의 없다.

GM이나 비밀경호국 모두(both GM and the Secret Service)

차에 관한 자세한 사항들을 철저한 비밀에 붙이고(keep the specs of the car under tight wraps) 있다.

단순히 기존 GM 차대(車臺) 위에 얹어 만들어진(be simply built atop an existing GM chassis) 것이 아니라

완전히 새롭고 특이한 디자인(a completely new and unique design)이라는 사실만 알려져 있다.

엔진의 종류나 배기량(engine type or displacement),

차체의 길이나 무게(the car’s length or weight)도 공개되지 않고 있다.

새 리무진의 창문들(the limo’s windows)이

현재 사용 중인 모델 것 보다 눈에 띄게 크고(be visibly larger than in the model currently in use),

손으로 꿰맨 가죽 시트(a hand-stitched leather seats)에

수직 조명(vertical lighting)으로 꾸며져 있다는 사실만 알려져 있을 뿐이다.

그러나 예전의 미 대통령 전용 리무진 모델들에 대해 알려진 것으로 미루어보면

(gauging from what is known of earlier models of presidential limo)

오바마의 새 전용차도 최소한 5인치 두께의 장갑판(armor plating at least 5 inches thick),

방탄창문(bulletproof windows),

펑크가 나도 주행할 수 있는 안전 타이어(runflat tires),

화학공격 경우에도 대통령을 보호할 수 있는 밀폐된 인테리어

(a sealed interior to protect the president in case of chemical attack) 등을 갖추고 있을 것으로 추정된다.

비밀경호국 대변인 에드 도노번에 따르면 새 전용차는

이미 비밀경호국에 인도된(be delivered to the Secret Service) 상태.

미완성 단계 차량의 승인 받지 않은 사진들(unauthorized photos of the unfinished vehicle)이

최근 인터넷에 누출돼(be leaked on the Internet) 돌아다니고 있지만,

공식 사진은 내주에나 공개될 예정(will not be released until next week)이다.

미 대통령 전용 리무진은 지난 1983년 이래 GM이 전담 제작

(exclusively build the presidential limousine since 1983)해오고 있다.

조지 W 부시 대통령이 써온 현재의 리무진은 앞으로도 계속 사용될 예정(will remain in use).

많은 전임 미 대통령 리무진들(many former presidential limos)은

대통령 도서관과 대통령박물관에 보관되고 있다.

그 중에서 도 헨리 포드 박물관에는 가장 많은 대통령 리무진 소장품들

(the largest collection of presidential limos)이 있으며,

케네디 전 대통령이 1963년 피격됐을 때 타고 있던 지붕 개폐식

(the convertible in which President Kennedy was shot in 1963)

리무진도 여기에 보관돼 있다.
