“도대체 활주로를 어디다 숨겨놓은 거야(Where have you hidden the runway?)”

독일의 한 남성이 음주비행 혐의로(on a charge of flying under the influence of alcohol)

조종사 면허가 취소(lose his pilot’s license)됐다.

구조 헬기에 의해 유도 착륙 되는(be guided to land by a rescue helicopter) 과정에선

비행장에 한바탕 소동이 벌어졌다(be thrown into an uproar).

술에 취한 65세의 이 아마추어 조종사(the intoxicated 65-year-old amateur pilot)는

지난 29일 자신의 세스나 경비행기를 타고 독일 동부 튀링겐주(州) 상공으로 비행에 나섰으며

(take to the skies above the eastern German state of Thuringia in his Cessna light aircraft)

그에 앞서 맥주와 와인을 진탕 마신 상태였던(be tanked up on beer and wine) 것으로 밝혀졌다.

그리고 일단 이륙한 뒤에는(once airborne) 비행기 조종을 하면서도(while at the controls)

칵테일을 더 마신(serve himself some more cocktails) 것으로 드러났다.

2시간쯤 뒤 만취한(be drunk like a fish) 그는 비행장을 알려주는 계기판을 읽을 수 없을

(be unable to read the instruments telling him where the airfield is) 정도가 됐다.

비행장을 찾지 못한 그는 무전을 보내기 시작했다.

“이봐, 당신들 그 아래 있는 것 내가 다 아는데,

젠장 당신들 어디 숨어 있는 거야(Where the bloody hell have you hidden yourself?)”라고 외쳐댔다.

당시 근무 중이던 관제탑 직원(control tower staff)에 따르면,

그는 노래를 몇 곡 부르며(sing a few songs)

장모를 빗댄 농담을 하기도(crack a mother-in-law joke) 했다고 한다.

계기 고장을 우려한(fearing instrumental failure) 관제탑은

비행장에 대기 중이던 구조헬기를 긴급 출격시켰다(scramble a rescue helicopter stationed at the airfield).

헬기는 비행장 서쪽 약 80㎞ 상공에 떠있던 그에게 접근해

(home in on the man in the skies some 80 kilometers west of the airport)

뒤를 따라오도록 함으로써(by giving instructions for the pilot to follow it back)

무사히 착륙하도록(make a safe landing) 유도하는 데 성공했다.

비행장 대변인에 따르면

헬기 조종사가 그의 비행기에 접근했을 때 그의 얼굴엔 술의 독기가 잔뜩 올라있었다

(get the full force of the alcohol fumes in his face)고 한다.

그는 조종석에서 내려 자신의 주차된 차로 비틀거리며 가면서(wobble from the cockpit to his parked car)

두 발이 뒤뚱거릴 정도로(be unsteady on his feet) 취해 있었다.

걱정이 된 비행장 측(concerned airfield authorities)은 경찰에 신고를 했고,

결국 그는 집으로 돌아가던 길에 경찰에 의해 세워져 음주측정을 한 결 과

운전 허용치의 4배 가까이 취해있던 것으로 밝혀졌다

(be stopped on the way home, breathalyzed and found to be nearly four times over the legal limit for driving).

결과는? 법적인 처벌 외에 조종사 면허증은 물론, 운전면허증까지 취소되는 대가를 치러야 했다.
