열 댓 시간이 넘도록 담배 한 대 피울 수 없는 장거리 비행은

애연가들에게 고문에 가까운 고통(a pain verging on a torture)이다.

때문에 안달이 난 흡연가들(harassed smokers)은

 비행이 끝나자마자 비행기에서 내려 흡연장소를 찾아 전력 질주

(sprint off the plane at the end of a flight in search for a smoking area)한다.

하지만 영국의 저가 항공사(the British budget airline) 라이언에어를 타는 애연가들은

 앞으로 그런 고통을 겪지 않아도 될 것 같다.

이 항공사가 기내에서 담배를 제공키로 함에 따라 그런 일은 곧 과거지사가 될 수도

(could soon be a thing of the past as Ryanair offers cigarettes on board) 있을 전망이다.

영국 언론에 따르면 라이언에어는 승객들에게

니코틴 조절을 할 수 있도록 연기 없는 담배를 허용함으로써

(by allowing passengers to get their nicotine fix from smokeless cigarettes)

비행 중 기내에서 흡연하던 과거 시절로 돌아갈(return to the past days of puffing away on flights) 예정이다.

 

이 항공사는 일단 한 달간 시험의 일환으로(as part of a month-long trial)

냄새와 연기가 나지 않으면서(be odorless and smokeless)

니코틴은 들어간 담배(nicotine-loaded cigarette)를

탑승 후 면세품으로 구입할 수 있도록(be available from duty-free on board) 할 계획이다.

이 담배 대용품(the substitutes)은 진짜 담배와 외양이나 느낌은 똑같으며

(look and feel like a real cigarette),

흡입을 통해 소량의 니코틴을 공급하게

(deliver small amounts of nicotine through inhalation) 만들어졌다.

하지만 흡연가인 안데레아 러셀(38)이라는 여성은

 “담배 대용품은 진짜 담배를 피우는 것과 같은 똑같은 느낌은 주지 못한다”면서

(saying the substitute does not give her the same feeling as smoking a real cigarette),

“다만 비행 중에 연기 없는 담배를 손에 들고 있다는 것 자체가 위안이 될 수

(could be comforting to hold the smokeless cigarette in her hands during a flight) 있을 것”이라는 반응을 보였다.

또 아이와나 포키베츠(28)라는 여성도

“담배 대용품에서 평소의 쾌감을 느낄(feel the usual rush from the substitute) 수는 없겠지만,

니코틴이 절박한 상황에선(if you were desperate for nicotine)

충분히 만족스러울 것(could be good enough)”이라고 말했다.

“맛은 좀 이상하지만(taste quite weird)

실제로 모든 연기를 들이마시는(actually inhale all the smoke) 것은 아니기 때문에

다른 담배들보다 더 만족스러울 수도(could be more pleasurable than other cigarettes) 있다”는 것이다.

그녀는 탑승 중 흡연을 위해 한 갑 살 용의가 있느냐는(would consider buying a pack to smoke on board) 질문에

“왜 안 사겠느냐. 정말 긴 장거리 비행이라면(if it is on a really long flight)

담배를 피우고 싶을 것(might feel like I need a smoke)”이라면서

“다만 너무 비싸지 않아야(as long as they are not too expensive) 사서 피울 것”이라고 말했다.

라이언에어는 얼마나 많은 승객들이 탑승 중 흡연을 원하는 지 조사한

(run a survey to see how many of its passengers would like to smoke on flights) 결과,

연기 없는 담배 도입이 긍정적 반응을 얻을 것이라는 결론을 얻었다.

특히 유럽 국가들 승객들에겐 큰 히트를 칠 수 있을

(become a particularly big hit with passengers from European countries) 것으로 전망됐다.


10가치 1갑당 5.40파운드(약 1만600원)인 이 담배(the packets costing ￡5.40 for ten cigarettes)는

프랑스, 이탈리아와 스페인과 같은(such as France, Italy and Spain)

흡연이 보다 일반적인 국가들에서(in countries where smoking is more common)

큰 수요를 보이고 있는 것으로 보도되고(have reportedly seen a big uptake) 있다.

연기나 냄새가 실제 담배와는 비교가 되지 않겠지만,

어쨌든 라이언에어의 이번 조치는 니코틴 중독 승객들의 항공 여행에 혁명적 결과를 가져올

(will revolutionize flying for nicotine -addicted passengers) 것으로 예상되고 있다.
