폴란드 주교 시절엔 극기-금욕 위해 이불 없이 맨바닥에서 자기도

요한 바오로 2세 전 교황이 고행을 경험하기 위해 정기적으로 자기 자신을 회초리로 때렸던

(regularly engage in acts of penance and self-flagellation) 것으로 밝혀졌다.

이 같은 사실은 요한 바오로 2세의 시성(諡聖) 절차를 준비하며 그의 삶을 재조명하고 있는

(have the task of reviewing John Paul‘s life and preparing a case for him being made a saint)

슬라보미르 오데르 몬시뇰에 의해 확인됐다.

가톨릭계에서는 “지난 2005년 선종한 요한 바오로 2세가 정기적으로 자신을 매질했었다(regularly whip himself)“는

오랜 소문이 있어왔다(have long been rumored).

 

 

오데르 몬시뇰은 ’왜 그는 성인인가‘라는 새 책에서(in the new book, ’Why he‘s a saint’)

 “요한 바오로 2세는 옷장에 보관하던(keep in his wardrobe)

바지 혁대로 스스로 채찍질을 했으며(flagellate himself with a trouser belt)

교황의 많은 수행원들(many members of the Pope‘s close entourage)이

본인들의 귀를 통해 교황이 스스로 매질하는 소리를 들었다

(hear with their own ears the Pope flagellate himself)“고 증언했다.

오데르 몬시뇰은 ”교황의 옷장 그의 옷들 사이에는(in his wardrobe, in between the robes)

특수 바지혁대(a special trouser belt)가 코트걸이에 걸려 있었다(be hung on a coat hanger)“며

”교황은 그 것을 회초리로 사용했다(use it as a whip)“고 말했다.

요한 바오로 2세는 교황들의 전통적인 여름 거주지(the traditional summer residence of popes)인

카스텔 간돌포(Castel Gandolfo·로마 남부 도시)에 갈 때도

언제나 그 것을 가지고 간(always take it with him) 것으로 알려졌다.

예수성심수녀원의 토비아나 소보드카 수녀(Tobiana Sobodka, a nun from the Sacred Heart of Jesus order)는

”카스텔 간돌포에서 옆 방에 머물렀는데(stay in the next room at Castel Gandolfo)

여러 차례 신체적 고행을 하시는(put himself through bodily penance) 것을 들었다“며

”스스로 매질을 할 때의 때리는 소리가 들려왔다

(can hear the sound of the blows when he flagellates himself)“고 회상했다.

스스로 매질하는 것은 예수가 겪은 극도의 고통을 상기하기 위해 일부 가톨릭 신도들에 의해 행해지고

(be used by some Catholics to remind themselves of the agonies endured by Christ) 있다.

요한 바오로 2세는 스스로 채찍질을 하는 것 외에

폴란드 주교 시절엔 극기와 금욕을 위해 종종 아무 것도 깔지 않은 맨바닥에서 자곤

(often sleep on a bare floor as an act of self-denial and asceticism) 했던 것으로 전해지고 있다.

오데르 몬시뇰은 새 책에서 ”요한 바오로 2세가 불치병에 걸릴 경우(in the event of an incurable sickness)

죽을 때까지 교황직에 머물기 보다는 스스로 물러나기로

(voluntarily step down rather than stay in office until his death) 했었다“는

사실도 공개했다.

그에 따르면 교황은 지난 1989년 교황직 기능을 충분히 수행할 수 없게 하는

(prevent him from sufficiently fulfilling the functions of his apostolic ministry)

불치로 보이는 병에 걸리면(in the cast of sickness that is deemed to be incurable)

가톨릭교회 수장 자리를 포기하겠다는(would renounce his positions as the head of the Roman Catholic Church)

비밀문서에 서명했었다고 밝혔다.

요한 바오로 2세는 교황으로 있는 동안(during his papacy)

1981년 성베드로 광장에서 무기를 소지한 한 터키인의 총을 맞고 하마트면 사망할 위기를 맞았고

(be shot and nearly killed by a Turkish gunman in St Peter’s Square in 1981),

암 수술 한 차례 등 여러 번 수술을 받았으며

(undergo several operations, including one for cancer),

10년 이상 파킨슨씨병을 앓았다(sufeer from Pakinson‘s disease for more than decade).

본명이 카롤 보이티와인 폴란드 태생 교황(the Polish-born pontiff whose real name is Karol Wojtyla) 요한 바오로 2세는

결국 선종할 때까지 교황 자리에 있었다(remain in office until his death).

앞서 교황직에서 물러났다면(Had he stepped down)

요한 바오로 2세는 1294년 이래 처음 자의에 의해 그렇게 하는 교황으로 기록됐을

(be recorded as the first Pope to do so willingly since 1294) 것이다.
