인생이란 것, 참 기묘하다(be weird).

부자들에겐 코미디(a comedy for the rich), 가난한 이들에겐 비극(a tragedy for the poor)이다.

코미디라고 생각해서일까.

부자들은 남을 배려하는(be considerate of others) 감정이입을 잘 하지 못한다(be not good at empathy).

돈 가진 사람 따로, 부자인 사람 따로 있다고 하는데,

부자라고 자처하는(think of oneself as a rich) 사람들은

남의 감정을 잘 이해하지 못한다(have trouble recognising the emotions of others).

새삼 무슨 연구결과가 필요할까마는 미국 캘리포니아대학 연구팀 보고에 따르면,

가난할수록 다른 사람의 느낌을 더 잘 알아본다고(be better at gauging how someone else feels) 한다.

더 자주 다른 사람들에게 의지해야 할 필요가 있다 보니(need to rely on other people more often)

자연스레(as a duck takes to water) 남을 배려하게 된다는 것이다.

 

 

이에 비해 부자들은 주위 사람들에게 의지하지 않고도 자신들의 문제를 해결할

(solve their problems without relying on other around them) 수 있기 때문에

남들에게 신경을 쓸(pay attention to other people) 필요가 없고,

그렇다 보니 다른 사람 감정을 배려하지 않게 된다고(have little regard for the feeling of others) 한다.

학력을 사회계층 측정수단으로 사용해 본(use educational level as a proxy for social class) 결과,

고학력인 사람들(people with more education)은

저학력인 사람들에 비해(in comparison with less educated people)

남들에게 더 매몰차게 구는(give others the cold shoulder) 것으로 조사됐다.

아쉬운 것이 없으니(want for nothing) 다른 사람들의 처지를 이해하지(understand how a person stands) 못한다는 것이다.

부자들은 '상류층(upper class)'이라는 개념을

누군가가 얼마나 부자인가와 동일시한다(equate to how rich someone is).

돈이 많으면 상류층이라고 착각한다(delude oneself).

부의 창출(the creation of wealth)이 아니라

 돈 그 자체를 위한 사랑(the love of money for its own s ake)이 잘못된 것이다.

돈이 말을 하면 진실이 침묵하는(keep silent) 것이 문제다.
