리비아의 카다피에게 미국이 붙인 별명은 '중동의 미친개'다.

그는 외국 방문 중 호텔 앞 잔디밭에 텐트를 치고(pitch a tent in a lawn in front of hotel) 숙소로 삼는다.

낙타들을 풀어놓고(cast loose camels) 젖을 짜(milk the camels) 먹는다.

여성으로만 구성된 경호부대를 대동하고 다닌다(take his all-female guard security force along with him).

어느 모로 보나(to all appearance) 정신이상자처럼 보인다(look like an insane).

그러나 실제로는 정권 유지라는 유일한 목적 달성을 위해(in order to achieve his sole objective of staying in power)

모든 수단을 동원하는(exhaust every means at his disposal) 교활한 폭군(a cunning despot)이다.

 

 

원유로 벌어들인 부(富)를 이용해(avail himself of oil wealth) 충성심을 사들인다(buy loyalty).

돈이 먹히지 않으면 위협과 잔혹한 억압에 굴복하게(surrender to intimidation and brutal suppression) 만든다.

부족 갈등을 조장해(foster conflicts among tribes) 그를 권좌에서 내몰기 위해 협력하는 것이 아니라

계속 서로 싸우게(keep them bickering instead of working together to unseat him) 한다.

심지어 자식들 중 어느 누구도 너무 강력해지지 못하도록(to prevent any of his own children from becoming too powerful)

경쟁의식을 부추기는(stoke their rivalries) 조작을 해왔다.

그는 최후의 순간까지(to the last drop of his blood)

연합군에 맞서 싸울 것이라고 호언(stretch the blanket)했다.

그러나 기소(起訴) 면제와 해외망명 조건으로(in exchange for immunity from prosecution and asylum abroad)

물러나는 것을 배제하지는(rule out stepping aside) 않은 상태다.

백척간두에 서게 되면(be driven to the last extremity)

벼랑 끝에서 한발 물러설(step back from the precipice) 가능성도 있다는 얘기다.

미친개에게 약이라는 몽둥이세례를 받고 있는(get beaten with a club) '중동의 김정일',

귀추가 주목된다(be watched with keen interest).
