미국 사우스웨스트항공 국내선 여객기 안.

돌려 쓴 모자에 멋쩍은 미소를 띤 한 고교생(a high schooler with a backwards hat and a sheepish smile)이

승객들에게 뭔가를 말하고 있었다.

스튜어디스가 기내 방송 마이크를 들어(hold up the public address system) 그의 입에 갖다 댔다.

"승객 여러분, 저는 크나큰 죄책감과 후회를 안고 여러분께 말씀을 드리게(address you with great guilty conscience and remorse) 됐습니다."

한 고등학교 라크로스(lacrosse·그물 라켓을 이용해 상대 골에 공을 넣는 경기) 선수인 맥 브리들러브는

기체 앞쪽에 서서(stand in the front of the fuselage) 쑥스러운 공개 사과문을 소리내어 읽어나갔다

(read out an embarrassing written public apology).

 

 

"탑승 과정에서(during the boarding process)

저는 코치님, 팀 동료들, 부모님이 저한테 기대하는 행동(expect me to behave)과는 다른 잘못을 저질렀습니다.

이 모든 것에 대해(for all of this) 여러분께 정중히 사과드립니다(make a polite apology).

저를 용서해주시는 마음을 가져주시기(find it in your hearts to forgive me) 바랍니다.

철없는 짓을 하는(do something immature) 어린애가 멋모르고 실수를 저지른(ignorantly commit a blunder) 것이려니 하고

이해해주시면 감사하겠습니다."

사연인즉 이랬다.

코치·동료들과 함께 비행기를 타게 된 그는 자기 차례가 아닌데도(be not his turn)

좀 더 빨리 탑승하려고 새치기를 했다(jump the queue to board plane more quickly).

일부 선수가 호명돼 줄 앞으로 불려나가자(be called to the front of the queue)

얼떨결에 함께 앞으로 나가버렸다(go ahead anyhow in an unguarded moment).

결과적으로 새치기를 하게 된(consequently cut in line) 것이다.

이 사실을 알게 된 코치는 그에게 기내 앞쪽 한가운데에 서서(stand front and center)

모든 승객에게 사과하는 것이 어떻겠느냐고 물었다.

잠시 망설이는 듯하던(appear hesitant) 그가 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어나갔다.

그리고 승무원의 도움을 받아(receive help from a flight attendant)

자기 잘못을 인정하고(admit his fault) 모든 승객의 용서를 구했다(ask the entire flight's pardon).

승객들은 사과를 마치고 수줍어하며 통로를 따라 자리로 돌아가는

(bashfully make his way down the aisle to his seat) 그에게

환한 웃음과 만장의 박수갈채로 격려를 보냈다(encourage him with bright smiles and unanimous applause).

누구 할 것 없이 모두(all and sundry) 기분 좋은(be in good humor) 표정들이었다.

'번식시키다, 불러오다, 심어주다'는 뜻의 breed와 love가 곁들여진

그의 이름 브리들러브(Breedlove)가 새삼스러운 순간이었다.
