호주 정치판에 새로운 당이 하나 등장할 예정(be about to get a new entry into national politics)이다.

이름하여 ‘섹스당’(Sex Party)이다.

 

오는 20일 멜버른에서 출범(be launched in Melbourne)할 이 정당의 창당 이유는

 “호주에서의(down under) 정치는 너무 고리타분하고 보수적(too stuffy and conservative)이기 때문”이라는 것.

 

창당을 주도한 인물은 피오나 패튼이라는 여성이다.

호주의 성인용품 소매업•엔터테인먼트 로비 그룹(adult retail and entertainment lobby group)인

‘에로스 협회’(Eros Association)의 회장이다.

 

패튼은 섹스당이 위선적인 도덕운동가들(hypocritical moral campaigners)과

점잔 빼는 정치인들(prudish politicians)에 맞서(in the face of them) 생겨났다고 말한다.

상당수 호주인들의 성적 욕구에 답하는 정치적 대응(a political response to the sexual needs)으로

자연스레 조직화 됐다고 주장한다.

 

섹스당 창당은 인터넷에 의무적인 여과장치를 두도록 한 지난 1월의 정부 결정

(the government’s decision to place a mandatory filter on the Internet)이

결정적 계기(a decisive momentum)가 됐다.

 

어린이들을 온라인 포르노와 폭력에서 보호하기 위해 마련된

(be designed to shield children from online pornography and violence)

이 정부안에 따르면 인터넷서비스 공급자들(Internet service providers)은

앞으로 포르노와 가정과 학교 공급에 부적절하다고 여겨지는 컨텐츠는 반드시 걸러내야

(be sure to filter out porno and other contents deemed inappropriate in the feeds to houses and schools) 한다.

 

따라서 검열 받지 않은 자료에 접근하기를 원하는 이용자들

(users wanting access to uncensored material)은

서비스에서 탈퇴(opt out of the service)할 수 밖에 없게 됐다.

 

이에 대해 섹스당 창당을 주도한 패튼은

 “20년 전에도 용인되던 것들(material deemed acceptable 20 years ago)이

이제 와서 금지된다(now be banned)는 것은 우스꽝스러운 일(something ludicrous)”이라며

 “포르노 등 관련 업계에 대한 사형선고나 다름없다(be as much as a death sentence)”고 항변한다.

 

패튼과 섹스당 지지자들은 그러한 입법 배경에는(behind such legislation) 기독교신도 정치인들이 있다며

 “그들을 물리칠 수 없다면(if we can’t beat them) 그들 속으로 들어가는 수 밖에 없고,

그래서 정당을 만들어 그들에게 맞서기로(pit ourselves against them) 한 것”이라고 말한다.

 

패튼은 또 “많은 호주인들은 모든 인터넷을 연령 제한 없는 것으로 위축시키기(reduce the Internet to a G-rated one)를

원하지 않을 것”이라며 “어린이들은 당연히 보호해야 하지만,

섹스라는 단어에 대한 무조건적인 공포(an absolute fear of the word sex)를 가질 필요는 없다”고 강조한다.

 

섹스당의 모토는 “섹스는 우리에게 음식처럼 자연스러운(be as natural to us as food) 것이며,

우리 삶에 필요한 한 부분(a necessary part of our lives)”이다.
