당신이 라디오에서 나오는 노래를 따라 부르는데(sing along with the radio)

친구들이 귀를 막았다면(cover their ears)?

합창단 지휘자(the choir director)가 당신에게 귓속말로

“큰 소리 내지 말고 립싱크만 하라”(ask you to lip-sync)고 부탁 아닌 부탁을 했다면?

 

100%입니다.”

 

음조에 맞춰 노래를 부르지 못하는(be unable to sing in tune) 음치(a tone-deaf)라면

뇌에 ‘배선 문제’가 있는(have ‘a wiring problem’) 것은 아닌지 의심해볼 필요가 있다고 한다.

 

미국 하버드메디컬센터와 베스 이스라엘 디코니스 메디컬센터 연구원인 사이키 루이 박사가

19일자 ‘신경과학저널’ 최신호에 발표한 연구 결과에 따르면

(according to new research in the August 19 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience),

음치는 뇌의 인지 영역과 운동 영역을 연결해주는 신경 섬유들

(nerve fibers that link perception and motor regions of the brain)이

단절돼 있는(be disconnected) 것으로 나타났다.

 

때문에 음치인 사람들은 듣기와 말하기는 정상(have normal hearing and speech)이면서도

높고 낮은 음조의 차이는 인지하지 못한다는(can’t detect differences in musical pitch) 것이다.

이러한 음치 현상(tone-deafness)은 집안에 유전되며(run in the family)

음치 비율은 전체 인구의 약 4%~17% 정도인(range from 4 percent to 17 percent) 것으로 조사되고 있다.

 

루이 박사 연구팀은 뇌 스캔을 통해 음치와 음치가 아닌 사람들은 특정 뇌 회로에 차이

(a difference in a particular brain circuit)가 있는 것을 발견했다.

음치들은 소리를 인식하고 생산하는 뇌의 두 영역 연결망이 훨씬 적은

(there are fewer connections between two areas of the brain that perceive and produce sounds)

것으로 나타났다는 것이다.

 

루이 박사는 이 연결망을 뇌 안의 2개 섬을 잇는 도로에 비유

(liken the connections to a highway between two islands in the brain)했다.

말하자면 음치인 사람은 도로 위 교통량이 적다

(there is less traffic on the highway)고 생각하면 된다는 얘기다.

 

루이 박사 연구팀이 절반은 음치인 20명의 뇌 스캔을 해 본

(take brain scans of 20 people, half of them tone-deaf) 결과,

음치들은 뇌의 전두엽과 측두엽 사이에 신경섬유가 훨씬 적었으며

(have fewer nerve fibers between the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain),

어떤 경우엔(in some cases) 신경섬유가 전혀 발견되지 않았다(can’t be detected at all).

 

루이 박사는 “연구팀이 살펴본 뇌 연결부위는 오랫동안 언어와 관련된 것으로 알려져 온

(be long known to be involved in language) 부분”이라면서,

이번 연구 결과로 음치를 교정하려면 뇌의 어떤 경로를 훈련해야 할 지를 알게

(know which brain pathways to train) 됐다고 밝혔다.

“따라서 조만간 언어 장애를 가진 사람들(those with language disorders)과 함께

음치인 사람들도 도와줄 방법(ways to help people with tone-deafness)을

찾을 수 있을 것”이라고 그는 전망했다.
